Landscape Boniface Musso circa 1805
The Painter John Martin was taught in Newcastle by Boniface Musso, an Italian Drawing Master and Fencing tutor from Piedmont & Florence - they became very close friends and travelled with Boni's son Charles Muss to London to ultimately exhibit and become Royal painters for King George IV. After Bonifaces death John Martin was known to walk on his own moorland - possibly Hampstead Heath or more likely his childhood 'Fells' above his parents village of Haydon Bridge - below Hadrians Wall - toward Allendale in Northumberland - here Martin, as pre arranged as a pact in life between the two close friends, would attempt to invoke Bonifaces spirit and communicate with his lost mentor - with no known success.
